Instructional design falls within the domain of training, where the major concern is to "facilitate learning and training transfer" (Goldstein & Ford, 2002, p. 86)

For Goldstein and Ford, instructional design includes the following:

  1. Developing training objectives that address what should be learned during the training process.
  2. Creating a plan of instruction that specifies the details and delivery sequence of what is to be learned.
  3. Incorporating principles of learning into the design of the program to make sure that the likelihood of learning is maximized.
