A "network" can be defined as "the pattern of ties linking a defined set of persons or social actors" (Seibert & Kramer, 2001, p. 220). The ties within networks are the relationships that link the social actors in networks, and they function as the unit (data point) of analysis within those networks. Seibert & Kramer cite Knoke & Kuklinksi (1982) as describing that the individual (focal person) providing the tie-specific data is referred to as the "ego," while those with whom he or she is tied are "alters."
