Work is difficult to define; and we are still looking for a satisfactory, succinct definition. However, in the meantime, Briner's (2008) description of work as having three domains is useful.

Briner points out that defining "work" is not straightforward, but "work"can be considered as:
  •  "... the context or properties of the working or task environment (job and work characteristics, work roles, team work, part-time and shiftwork).
  • "work as employee behavior at work (behaviours and performance, thoughts, feelings)
  • "work as the employee-employer relationship (the psychological contract, what employees give and get back)" (Briner, 2008, p. 23).
