About Organizational Psychology

Organizational psychology (OP):
  • Is a science that can be used to pursue desired outcomes for organizations and their stakeholders, including employees, managers and executive leadership as well as external constituencies.
  • Studies the world of work by drawing from psychology, sociology, anthropology, systems theory and related fields.
  • Was created as an applied science – chiefly for selection, job placement and performance issues during World War I – but has evolved to address a broader array of domains including organizational change, new technology implementation, employee motivation and well-being, learning and development, and personal career issues.
  • Offers theory and evidence as tools to help create outstanding organizations that honor their missions as well as the personal career callings of their employees.
  • Doesn't get used much by CEOs, organizations and managers in the "real world" because learnings do not transfer very well across "the academic-practitioner divide."
  • Is aligned with evidence-based management (EBM), which relies on science to deliver better outcomes than personal experience alone. EBM can help reduce uncertainty during threatening situations such as crisis management and market-entry.
TheVerk.com was created to help advance the application of OP – as well as its acceptance and understanding within popular culture.
