Baldwin & Ford's (1988) framework proposes that transfer of training is influenced by:
  • Trainee characteristics, consisting of ability, personality and motivation,
  • Training design, consisting of principles of learning, sequencing and training content,
  • The work environment, consisting of support and opportunity to use.

Their model proposes that trainee characteristics and the work environment have a direct path to the key outcomes of generalization and maintenance. Further, for all three elements, learning/retention functions as an intervening variable en route to generalization and maintenance.
