Career counselling can be understood as "a process which enables people to recognise and utilise their resources to make career-related decisions and manage career-related issues" (Nathan & Hill, 2006, p. 2.)


Nathan and Hill distinguish "career counseling" from "coaching," writing that the latter seeks to help individuals become more effective in their current careers.
