Therapeutic counselling can be understood as "psychotherapy," which is "a change-oriented process that occurs in the context of a contractual, empowering and empathetic professional relationship. Its rationale explicitly or implicitly focuses on the personality of the client(s), the technique of psychotherapy or both. Durable change is affected on multiple aspects of clients lives. The process is idiosyncratic and determined by the interaction of patients' and therapists' preconceived positions." (Zeig & Munion, 1990, p. 14).
